Now the holidays are over and all of the seasonal decor has been removed I always feel that my house is a little bare and in need of a decor pick-me up for winter. I have been searching for some new ideas and I came across a few DIY sites that will help with the winter decorating blahs. A winter white mantel is a great place to start and it will last through the cold months using classic winter colors, flowers and motifs. I also love the idea of filling various shaped jars with winter items and you can change them out throughout the various seasons. As you are removing the holiday decor look around and see if you can re-purpose the glitz using silver, red and white items such as vases, candle sticks, picture frames & a red throw to add a pop of color. You can also re-purpose the holiday evergreens by using twigs, berry’s & sprays to fill the space and cozy up a cold room.
My latest and favorite DIY project is a handmade framed chalkboard that you can write on and add seasonal artwork. All you need is a frame, a piece of wood and chalkboard paint. One trick I have learned to help with lettering is to use chalkboard markers instead of ordinary chalk as they provide a much cleaner line and come in various colors. You can change out the lettering and artwork to align with the different seasons and you can also use the board to write menu items if you are hosting a dinner party.
